Natwest Credit Card help years on....

$

Hello,

I took out a Natwest Credit Card in Feb 2009 and immediately ran up the £750 limit worth of debt. I stopped using the card when I ran up the debt and after moving house several times i no longer have any documentation regarding the account or have the card. (I didn't inform Natwest of the change to my address so I have never received a new card, statements etc).

Each month since 2009 a direct debit of varying amounts from £13-£40 have been taken by Natwest (NWB CSD operations - is the direct debit name). My credit report is showing the account is up to date with a £603 balance.

I rang Natwest to sort this out this week but they could not locate me or the account and told me to write in.

Does anybody have any advice?

Help understanding interest

Hey,

I made a transfer to bank of £2000 from my credit card which is interest free until dec 2016 and continued using my card for some expenses and have paid expenses off in full every month plus a little bit extra to wear down the £2000 slowly.

But for the last few months I have been charged interest and I'm not sure why, I thought that as long as I paid off at least the amount of the expenses every month the 2000 could remain interest free.

Are my payments going towards the £2000 transfer to bank rather than the monthly expenses?

NatWest CC paid in full, still charged interest

I've used my NatWest credit card for years as my main way to spend, before paying it off in full at the end of the month. This works for me as I have quite a lot of expenses for work (flights, etc) and this allows me to claim money back before having to pay for it via the credit card bill.

More recently, I've sometimes not quite paid it in full, where it will mean I am overdrawn. In simple terms, interest for my current account overdraft is 30% plus a charge, whereas interest on the credit card is 23%. This seemed a fairly rational way to manage my finances and I thought no more of it until now.

The last couple of months have been pretty expensive, with lots of travelling for work and last month I bought a new car, but at the start of April I paid off my credit card in full. I was then massively surprised to find I had two charges on this months bill, one for £1.35 and another for over £100.

Looking in my terms and conditions, it seems that if the credit card is not paid in full, not only will interest be paid on the outstanding credit but also on the full balance of the following month. I'm absolutely seething, as this seems a fundamental change to how the credit card has operated and is frankly unfair/dishonest. So my question, before I tell NatWest to stick their credit card where the sun doesn't shine, is whether this is a standard term now or just one that is particular to NatWest?

Thanks in advance for any help.

AMEX cashback or rewards

Hi all,

I've had the AMEX Platinum Cashback credit card (the one with the fee, not the, "Everyday" version) for a few years. I spend £12,000 - £14,000 per year on it and make the most of the cashback.

I'm wondering if it's worth switching to the Green or Gold charge cards. Both offer Membership Rewards. I do not travel often / rarely fly (one trip every two years at a push) and would end up exchanging my Membership Rewards points for some other deal. Does anybody have experience of doing this? Can points be exchanged for cash or statement credit? I would be replacing my cashback card with the new card and would therefore need to cover the £60 / £140 fees (year two) with whatever benefit I get.

I think I already have my answer, that I'm best as I am or only marginally better with the Membership Rewards cards. Any advice is welcome - thanks!

Credit card for booking foreign hotel

Hi
I am soon booking my holiday to Thailand (doing it DIY as much cheaper) I will be using a credit card to book the accommodation. We go in November but I am booking accommodation now to get early bird deals, however that means I need to pay for them now. When I go on booking.com, Agoda, Expedia etc it says that my credit card will be charged in local currency (Baht).
My credit card has 0% on purchases for two years so I’m hoping to use this and effectively pay off the accommodation costs in instalments throughout the year. Even though this is a foreign purchase will it still be classed as a 0% purchase?? (I know I will be charged circa 3% for exchange fees but happy with this).
Nearer the time I will look into an overseas 0% credit card to cover our day spending while we are over there, but from my little research you need to pay off the full amount on these.
Just want to double check in case I make a stupid mistake! I would hate to make a rookie error and end up being charged interest on it every month that it isn’t paid off.
Thanks for your help in advance!!

Amex Approval Times & Asking for Documentation

Hi all!

First post here so hope I've not made any social faux pas!

I applied this week for an Amex credit card. Specifically, their platinum rewards everyday cards which offers 5% cashback on purchases for the first three months.

I've not had a credit card before but met all their criteria and have a good credit history (I think!). No CCJs or history of missed bill payments, the only time I've been denied credit was about 7 years ago when I was a student and applied to extend my interest free overdraft.

I just want the card for emergencies, for any important large purchases and to start to build a really strong credit rating with a view to buying a house in a few years and thought that the cashback would be a nice bonus feature.

Amex sent me an email after I sent my application and informed me they'd have to look at me further before approving me and that it should take them 7-10 working days. I was really worried to not be instantly approved at first, though I can see why as I'm a private rental tenant, I've been in my house for less than 3 years and I don't have a huge history of credit of any kind, so I guess that was understandable.

However, they emailed me yesterday and asked me to physically post some supporting documentation over to them. Specifically a photocopy of some photo ID (I used my driving license) and a recent bill or bank statement as proof of address. I sent these to a freepost address in Brighton.

I'm going to take heart from this and hope that it's a good sign as they're asking to verify these documents (and are paying for me to post them) rather than denying me outright. However, I just wondered if anyone could give any advice on this? Has anyone had this before with applying for an Amex? How long does it take to get a response after posting these documents? Is this common practice among other card providers before approving someone with little credit history? It struck me that mailing the documents was a bit of an odd thing to do and I'd have expected them to provide a facility online whereby they could be uploaded as a pdf!

Many thanks all, any help or advice would be much appreciated :)

Balance Transfer

Hi all,

I have a 0% deal coming to an end with Barclaycard soon and want to transfer the remaining balance (£950) to my Nationwide card in order to pay a lower rate on the remaining balance (the Barclaycard is 34% APR). I'm aware it would have been more useful to pay off the balance before the 0% deal ended but unfortunately haven't been able to do this.

I don't currently have the funds on my Nationwide card to complete the transfer so have taken advantage of another Barclaycard 0% deal and transferred the balance of that onto my Barclaycard. When I transfer the old Barclaycard balance (£950) to the Nationwide card, will they transfer this old balance or could they potentially take this from the new transfer I made, hence I would still be charged interest on the £950?

Sorry if this is confusing, it's difficult to explain what I mean. I would prefer to open a further card with a 0% deal but my chances of being accepted are low.

Beware of foreign outlets selecting to pay in £ rather than the local currency

I always use one of the credit cards that don’t charge a foreign exchange fee, but am fed up with being stung by outlets (from shops/restaurants and even Alicante Airport duty free).
Some pin machines give you the option to pay in Euros or have it exchanged to pounds by the vendors bank (at a fee!). I know to always select to pay in the local currency.
After entering the PIN, I hold onto the terminal as long as possible, to see if this screen comes up. Sometimes, everything appears complete, and the screen is in Spanish and the vendor takes the terminal back (usually to pint receipts). However, sometimes the question that should be being asked of me, about pounds or euros is being answered by the vendor, without my knowledge. It is only after getting the receipt, that you see it has been converted to pounds by the vendors bank. It is too late to dispute and change at this time. (although I always let the outlet know how annoyed I am that they have done it).
Pressure needs to be put on the credit card companies and banks to eradicate this fraud. The vendors bank makes up to 3% in the conversion, at my loss. Ideally it should be banned for the vendors bank to interfere and offer the exchange - it should just be down to the card owner. Another solution would be to ask me the conversion question BEFORE I enter my PIN, and then to show what you will actually be charged. (i.e. E25 or £19). If you are happy with this, you authorise it by entering your PIN.

Declined on all credit card applications

Hi all first post,

I have been trying to get a credit card with a decent APR and cash back but I am getting declined left right and centre from Halifax, Amex, MBNA, Natwest, .....

I have no adverse credit history whatsoever I currently have two unsecured loans that I have never missed a payment on and have little time on them left. As I wasn't being accepted for more mainstream Prime Lenders I applied for a credit builder card from capital one and was given a initial £500 credit limit (now increased to £750 after 7 months) I have used the card up to its limit but always stayed within the limit and pay my balance in full and have never incurred interest on the account. I currently have a 4/5 noodle rating and a 767/999. I also have had PayPal credit with a £600 limit and have never used it though. I have held the two credit cards for over 9 months and do not see much reflection in my credit rating as well as how lenders are assessing me. Why am I being declined? I have history of managing credit, I have a income that more than meets requirements and have been on the electoral roll for over 10 years?

I I'm new to the forum so sorry if this has been covered before.

I am getting married soon and have got a BA Amex credit card to earn avios with all the money we are paying out.

So the question is for suppliers that have no means of accepting credit cards (photographer, band etc) can I pay them through PayPal with my Amex and still earn points?

If anyone has experienced of this advice would be much appreciated

Many Thanks

Success with renegotiating terms of credit card?

Evening all. I am just after some anecdotes about anyone who has tried, succesfully, to renegotiate offers on their credit cards. I keep getting notifications on my Halifax credit card that the balance is being upped which is actually quite useful, because it isn't particularly utilised. I do have a balance on a different credit card which I would like to transfer to a 0% (of which Halifax offer some of the best deals).

I won't be accepted for a new credit card with them (but can probably go elsewhere for good 0% deals) but just wanted to check whether anyone has had success asking a provider to attach a balance transfer term to an existing card? I know it can't hurt to ask the question but just wanted some experiences. Also, would they make a hard credit search if I asked the question (which they don't when the voluntarily increase the credit limit)?

Thanks in advance.

AMEX Membership Rewards referral code

Hi all,

I'm taking out an AMEX Gold chargecard. Am I right in thinking that existing cardholders have referral codes which net a signup bonus which is mutually beneficial for the new and existing cardholders? Does this prevent you from getting the 20,000 initial spending bonus? And can the code be used online or is it for phone applications only?

Thanks in advance. Feel free to PM me if it's the preferred way to send does

Does MSE have exclusive terms as a referrer on CCs? I ask because on here the Barclaycard freedom rewards card has the 0% purchases period advertised as 25 month but on the barclaycard website it is only 12 months, the same as the balance transfer period.

Allocation of Payments.

Hi. I'm hoping someone could help. I can't quite find the exact answer..
I have a credit card which I transferred a balance to. The 0% promo rate ends in 2018.
I've been offered a balance transfer on the same card but with a 0% promo rate that ends 2017.
Let's say (to make it easier to explain) that I transfer £100 onto the card using the promo rate that ends 2017.
If I paid £50 each month I'll have paid the £100 off. Once paid off would the outstanding balance remain on 0% til 2018??
I guess I'm asking how my payments are allocated towards the debt.
Thanks.
