Which credit card type - with most benefits

Hello Members,

I would like to introduce myself, I am a complete newbie in more ways than one:
- Although I occasionally read articles in various forums, this is the first time I have taken the plunge and registered for an account in order participate in one, it’s for a good reason, I’ll let you in on the reasons a little later.

- I am also new to this particular forum

- Fairly new to the current trends in the best (most value) credit cards (since I have had my Barclaycard for 21 yrs and never thought to change it). On average, I spend close to 2k a month on my Barclaycard which balance is always paid off in full every month.

- New to collecting freebies and rewards other than my ‘MyWaitrose, Sainsbury Nectar and Tesco Club’ cards

Now the reasons for making the decision to join this particular forum tonight are:
Someone mentioned to me a couple of months back about how he benefits of putting all his spend on his American Express card and the rewards he earns on numerous things (retailers) in the marketplace.
I am about to embark on refurbishing my home and thought it might be the opportune time to venture out to find a card that will give me something in return for my big spend.

I have just read the article on ‘American Express Cashback’ guide, very useful indeed. However, it’s the nitty gritty details of the benefits that I am keen to understand and know before I decide on which type of Amex card to apply for. If my annual spend on the card is going to be circa £10k, will I benefit more by app applying for Amex ‘The Preferred Rewards Gold Card’? The fee for having this card is pretty steep though, £125 pa although currently, on their website, they are offering £0.00 for the first year.
My question is, once my first anniversary freebie period is over, will it still be worth me having this option? Or do I opt for the Platinum (fee free) but at a mere tiered 1.25%, post first free 3 months? Bearing in mind all the big spend to come in this next six months to 12 months?

Also where is the best place for me to apply for an Amex card, directly via their website or through their partners?

I would appreciate your views and guidance.

Yours
Newbie to Forum, wildcath2k
